Journalism

The major in journalism prepares students for a career in media, with emphases on storytelling, ethical principles and responsible communication. Students will develop an understanding of concepts and theories in courses devoted to media history, ethics and law. They will learn to gather information and to think critically, creatively and independently as writer and photographer in skills courses that begin at a basic level and build to advanced courses where everything they have learned is applied to the production of a fully realized work of journalism. Clear and direct writing is essential for every student in the program.

Before Graduating Students Must

• Satisfactory evaluation of your professional portfolio, evaluated by a team of professionals and faculty.
• Complete requirements for the baccalaureate degree, as determined by faculty.

Skills Students will Acquire in the Major (SLOs)

1. Identify and describe key elements related to legal issues of the media and the First Amendment.
2. Use ethical reasoning skills to resolve dilemmas currently faced by journalists.
3. Apply basic skills in emerging technologies appropriately to the practice of journalism and storytelling.
4. Use critical analysis skills to prepare and present images and information.
5. Report and write journalistic quality stories using forms and styles appropriate for the profession.
