Athletic Training

Students majoring in athletic training are reviewed each semester against critical-tracking criteria established by the department and athletic training faculty.

Overview

Acceptance into the athletic training education program (ATEP) requires a secondary application (portfolio) process beyond that required for admission into the University of Florida. Due to the competitive nature and restricted capacity, the Board of Governors has designated the ATEP a limited-access program. Please review the current catalog and speak to your academic adviser. Portfolio materials are due to the APK advising office (190E FLG) on or before February 1 of the sophomore year.

Portfolio Process for Admission

All requirements for program admission must be completed prior to enrollment in the ATEP curriculum (Summer B). Applicants are accepted conditionally until these requirements are met. Admission can be denied if requirements are not fulfilled prior to initial enrollment in the program. Application packets can be picked up from 190E FLG on or after October 15.
Note: Required documents noted in parentheses (forms are part of the application packet).

• Completion of 100 observation hours under the supervision of a certified athletic trainer (clinical experience observation form)
• Pre-athletic training student observation hours must be completed during the freshman and/or sophomore year (or during completion of an associate's degree)
• Two letters of recommendation with at least one from a supervising athletic trainer (recommendation form)
• Application letter/letter of intent (explaining why you have chosen a career in athletic training and indicating your goals and professional expectations. This letter should be typed and professional.)
• Bloodborne pathogens completion certificate (must be current for the academic year of application)
• First aid certification and emergency cardiac care (ECC) certification (provide copies of the front and back of each card).
• EEC certification details
• HBV vaccination documentation or signed waiver (immunization record)
• HBV 3-shot series must be initiated at time of application. Completion of HBV series or signed waiver must be documented prior to clinical rotations
• Immunization record documenting TB, MMR, HBV, tetanus, diphtheria
• Medical examination (physical / wellness form)
• Meet technical standards with or without accommodations (complete form)
• Transfer students must be admitted into the UF Department of Applied Physiology and Kinesiology. All transfer students must meet the transfer requirements for Summer B admission to UF (Apply by February 1)
• Complete interview upon selection for admission consideration
• Completion of all common prerequisites as outlined by the Florida Board of Governors for athletic training education programs in the State University System (official transcript and advising form)
• Completion of at least 60 credit hours, including general education and writing requirements (official transcript and advising form)
• Minimum 3.0 overall and critical tracking GPA (official transcript and advising form)
• B or higher in anatomy (APK 2100 with lab or equivalent) and physiology (APK 2105C with lab or equivalent) (official transcript and advising form)

Notification of acceptance will be made on or around April 1.

Selection Criteria

Selection of students is competitive and based on successful completion of the portfolio process for admission. Students are accepted for admission once each academic year to begin the Summer B term. The ATEP steering committee evaluates each candidate’s portfolio materials and makes appropriate selection of candidates. The UF ATEP may take up to 20 deserving individuals a year, but reserves the right to admit fewer students.

Transfer Students

Please review the admissions requirements listed above and all transfer information. Students may be admitted into the ATEP provided they fulfill all program admission requirements as outlined above. Coursework completed at another institution will be evaluated by the registrar and athletic training program director to determine whether the course objectives completed coincide with the course objectives of courses required for admission into the UF ATEP. The University of Florida may require the syllabus from a course taken at another institution. If a course completed at another institution does not meet the requirements for the UF ATEP, the student may be required to re-take the course at UF prior to admission.

Critical Tracking

To graduate with this major, students must complete all university, college and major requirements.

Equivalent critical tracking courses as determined by the State of Florida Common Course Prerequisites may be used for transfer students.

Semester 1

• 2.5 UF GPA required
• Complete 2 of 8 critical-tracking courses with a 2.5 GPA on tracking coursework: APK 2100C, APK 2105C, BSC 2010/2010L, HUN 2201, MAC 1147 or calculus,
  PHY 2053/2053L, PSY 2012 and STA 2023

Semester 2

• 2.6 UF GPA
• Complete 2 additional critical-tracking courses with a 2.6 GPA on tracking coursework

Semester 3

• 2.8 UF GPA required
• Complete 2 additional critical-tracking courses with a 2.8 GPA on tracking coursework

Semester 4

• 3.0 UF GPA required
• Complete all 8 critical-tracking courses and associated labs with a 3.0 GPA on all tracking coursework

Recommended Semester Plan

To remain on track, students must complete the appropriate critical-tracking courses, which appear in bold.

* General education: You need three international (GE-N) credits and three diversity (GE-D) credits for degree.
Writing requirement (WR): You need 24,000 words for degree.

** APK 3110C is prerequisite to APK 4125C.
