    MinorsUF Online Minors

    The minor provides a traditional, well-accepted way to recognize that a student has completed a significant body of work outside the major. A minor shall consist of no fewer than 15 semester credits of coursework, earned with minimum grades of C. At least three courses (none can be individual work) of no fewer than three credits each must be at the 3000 level or above. Of the total credits, no more than three may be individual work. Students should consult an advisor in the appropriate department for the requirements for each minor.

    A minor may not inherently overlap with the student's major (e.g., a history major may not declare a history minor, even if the student takes additional history credits beyond what is required for the major). In addition, students must complete a minimum of six credits of coursework exclusive to the minor that cannot count toward the student's major(s) or other minor(s).

The site also provides a list of majors/minor combinations that will not be approved due to overlap. This list is not all-inclusive; for each minor application an AAC advisor will review whether your intended major/minor combination is acceptable.

    Actuarial Science Prepares students for careers as actuaries. 36
    African-American Studies Explores the applied roots of African-American studies with investigation of a range of perspectives in the African diaspora. 18
    African Studies Provides a solid foundation for careers in teaching, research and other professional work for which knowledge of Africa is essential. 15
    American Indian and Indigenous Studies Focuses on North or South America with additional interdisciplinary focus in anthropology, art history, history, literature and religion. 15
    Anthropology Students must complete a minimum of six credits of coursework exclusive to the minor that cannot count toward the major(s) or other minors. 15
    Arabic Language and Literature An intensive summer program in Fez, Morocco, is available for students at all levels. 15
    Asian Studies Students pursuing the major in East Asian languages are not eligible to receive the minor in Asian studies. 15-22
    Asian-American Studies Examines the diverse experience of Asian-Americans and Pacific Islanders in the U.S. 15
    Astronomy Students must complete a minimum of six credits of coursework exclusive to the minor that cannot count toward the major(s) or other minors. 15
    Botany Students pursuing majors in biology, entomology or wildlife ecology and conservation are not eligible to receive the minor in botany. 15
    Chemistry Students pursuing majors in biology-biotechnology, botany or chemical engineering are not eligible to receive this minor. 20-23
    Classical Studies Consists of five Greek, Latin or classics courses. At least nine of these credits must be in courses at the 3000 level or above. 15
    Communication Studies Provides an interdisciplinary forum for the study of communication and the opportunity for students to add indispensable tools to their educational program. 18
    East Asian Languages and Literatures:
    Chinese and Japanese    		 Students must complete a minimum of six credits of coursework exclusive to the minor that cannot count toward the major(s) or other minors. 15-19
    East-Central European Studies Provides an organized course of study for less commonly taught languages that do not offer stand-alone majors and where two semesters of study are not sufficient. 18-22
    English Students must complete a minimum six credits of coursework exclusive to the minor that cannot count toward the major(s) or other minors. 15
    European Union Studies Provides multidisciplinary expertise and hands-on practical experience in EU-related affairs. Open to all undergraduates. 18
    Florida Teaching
    Offered jointly with College of Education    		 A Professional Training Option meant to prepare students for temporary teacher certification in Florida by completing the professional education coursework necessary for certification. 18
    French and Francophone Studies Students must complete a minimum of six credits of coursework exclusive to the minor that cannot count toward the major(s) or other minors. 17
    Geography Complements majors in agricultural sciences, business, environmental sciences, geology, health sciences, international studies, journalism, social sciences, and travel and tourism. 15
    Geology Students pursuing the Bachelor of Arts in geography with a specialization in environmental geosciences are not eligible to receive this minor. 17
    German Students must complete a minimum of six credits of coursework exclusive to the minor that cannot count toward the major(s) or other minors. 15
    Greek Studies A maximum of six credits of Beginning Modern Greek 1 and 2 can apply to this minor. A minimum of nine credits must be at the 3000 level or above. 15-19
    Health Disparities in Society Provides a framework that teaches students to integrate concepts of culture and health disparities into their personal and professional development. 15
    Hebrew Students pursuing a major in Jewish studies are not eligible for this minor. 15
    History Students must complete a minimum of six credits of coursework exclusive to the minor that cannot count toward the major(s) or other minors. 15
    Italian Studies Complements any major from the humanities and engineering to business and the fine arts; can also become the basis for graduate studies in Italian. 19
    Innovation An overview of the major functional elements of innovation – creativity, entrepreneurship, ethics, and leadership – and an opportunity to apply them in a multidisciplinary project. 15-16
    Jewish Studies Students must complete a minimum of six credits of coursework exclusive to the minor that cannot count toward the major(s) or other minors. 25
    Latin American Studies Students who pursue the minor will enhance their career prospects through their knowledge of Latin American languages and cultures. 15
    Linguistics Students must complete a minimum of six credits of coursework exclusive to the minor that cannot count toward the major(s) or other minors. 15
    Mathematics Open to all students who are not majoring in mathematics. 23-24
    Medieval and Early Modern Studies Focuses on medieval and early modern European culture and its influences on the modern world. 18
    Philosophy No more than six credits can be below the 3000 level. 15
    Physics Consists of the complete sequence in general physics, modern physics and two 3000/4000-level courses in the physics major course sequence. 17
    Portuguese Only courses numbered POR 3242 and above count toward the minor. 15
    Public Leadership For students interested in careers in the public and private sectors and those interested in acquiring skills to develop as civically responsible citizens. 21
    Religion Consists of five REL-prefixed religion courses; three of these courses must be taken at the intermediate or advanced level at UF. 15
    Religious Ethics Students must complete a minimum of six credits of coursework exclusive to the minor that cannot count toward the major(s) or other minors. 15
    Russian Students must complete at least five Russian courses beyond the 1000 level. Up to six credits can be transferred from another institution. 15
    Sociology None. 15
    Spanish Students must complete a minimum of six credits of coursework exclusive to the minor that cannot count toward the major(s) or other minors. 18
    Statistics Students must complete a minimum of six credits of coursework exclusive to the minor that cannot count toward the major(s) or other minors. 15
    Sustainability Studies Students benefit from the teaching and research of faculty in multiple departments and colleges; complements any major. 18
    Teaching English as a Second Language For undergraduates who might want to work in English language programs in the United States or abroad. 15
    Theories and Politics of Sexuality Students pursuing the women's studies major are not eligible to receive the minor in theories and politics of sexuality (TPS). 18
    Women's Studies Complements work in humanities, social science or hard science majors, focusing on questions of gender, sex and power that may be discussed but not explored in depth in traditional disciplines. 18
    Zoology Students pursuing majors of biology, entomology, food science and human nutrition, microbiology, natural resource conservation or wildlife ecology are not eligible. 17-18
