    The Bachelor of Arts in Portuguese enables students to achieve communicative competence in all four language skills: speaking, comprehension, reading and writing. Students will become knowledgeable in Portuguese and Brazilian culture, literature and/or linguistics and they will learn how to interpret Portuguese-language texts according to their cultural, literary and/or linguistic content.

    Before Graduating Students Must

    • Satisfactorily complete an assignment in a 4000-level course that includes the written analysis of a text (text and analysis in Portuguese) according to its cultural, literary and/or linguistic content and an oral presentation and discussion conducted in Portuguese.
    • Complete requirements for the baccalaureate degree, as determined by faculty.

    Students in the Major will Learn to

    1. Knows cultural correlates, literary production and/or linguistic structure of texts written in Portuguese.
    2. Interprets cultural correlates, literary production and/or linguistic structure of texts written in Portuguese.
    3. Writes Portuguese competently, with appropriate grammar, vocabulary, orthography and stylistic conventions.
    4. Engages effectively in spoken communication in Portuguese, including the ability to understand the spoken language, speak with correct grammar, vocabulary and pronunciation and use appropriate registers.
