    A study of films of one or more of the historically important national cinemas in Europe. The course is taught in English.
    EUS 3110 Culture and Society in Europe

    Examines central issues in one or more of the various cultures and societies in Europe.
    EUS 3111 Greece and Turkey: Myths and Misconceptions

    Reviews major aspects, historical, political and social, of the animosity between Greece and Turkey to dispel existing myths and misconceptions.

    EUS 3140 Culture in Crisis: The European Avant-Garde between the Wars
    Credits: 3.
    Introduces the ideology and aesthetics of the major movements of the 20th century avant-garde, focusing on developments in Paris, Berlin, Prague and Moscow. (H and N)
    EUS 3220 Secret Police under Communism
    Credits: 3; Prereq: instructor permission.
    Overview of the secret-police forces and the political use of terror in the Central-European countries of Germany, Hungary, Czechoslovakia, Poland, Romania and Bulgaria between 1945 and1990.
    EUS 3221 Socialist Control and Resistance in Eastern Europe After 1945
    Credits: 3; Prereq: EUS 2001 or EUS 2003.
    Explores the political, intellectual, social and cultural history of Eastern Europe from 1945 to 1990 and discusses ways in which the Soviet leadership manipulated the governing and legal systems of the Easter European Communist countries.
    EUS 3300 Nationalism and the Idea of Europe
    Credits: 3.
    How a European identity arose along with the emergence of nationalism during the Reformation, the wars of religion and the Enlightenment.
    EUS 3400 Migration in Europe
    Credits: 3; Prereq: instructor permission.
    Examines migration in Europe, examining topics ranging from the first modern refugee crisis in the aftermath of World War I and the Russian Revolution to contemporary debates about immigration in the European Union.

    Intermediate rotating topics course on various European issues. (H)
    EUS 3937 Applied European Language
    Credits: 1; can be repeated with change in content up to 3 credits; Prereq: instructor permission.
    An enhancement section designed to accompany and complement area studies courses offered in other departments. Readings and discussions are in a continental European language to enable students to develop specific vocabulary and fluency related to the content of the companion course and to provide them with an international perspective on the issues of the main course.
    EUS 3938 European Less Commonly Taught Languages
    Credits: 1 to 4; can be repeated with change in content up to 16 credits; Prereq: placement test or instructor permission.
    Rotating topics course to facilitate language instruction for European lesser/least commonly taught languages. Instruction is in a European language to enable students to develop relevant competencies in speaking, writing, listening, and comprehension.

    History of institutions and theoretical interpretations of European Union (EU) from its origins to present, including some general European history and background of EU's member status.

    EUS 4212 European Economic Integration: Politics and Policy

    Examines the political economy of European Union (EU) economic integration from an interdisciplinary perspective.
    EUS 4213 Turkey and the EU: History, Present and the Future
    Credits: 3; Prereq: EUS 2001 or EUS 2003.
    The dynamics and developments in Turkish politics with regard to Turkey's EU path. Students will understand the challenges the EU faces at present with Turkey, as this country’s candidacy highlights the unresolved issues facing a more integrated EU.

    Reading and discussions in advanced topics of European studies.
    EUS 4911 Undergraduate Research in European Studies
    Credits: 0 to 3; can be repeated with change in content up to 6 credits.
    Provides firsthand, supervised research in European Studies. Projects may involve inquiry, design, investigation, scholarship, discovery or application in European Studies.
    EUS 4930 Special Topics in European Studies

    Advanced variable topics on current European Union issues from multiple disciplinary perspectives, and taught by visiting EU scholar(s).

    HNG 1130 Beginning Hungarian 1

    This course and its sequel, HNG 1131, constitute the basic sequence in Hungarian.
    HNG 1131 Beginning Hungarian 2
    Credits: 5; Prereq: HNG 1130 with minimum grade of C, or S, or the equivalent.
    Second semester of basic sequence in Hungarian.
    HNG 1180 Elementary Hungarian: Review and Progress 1
    Credits: 3.
    Alternative to HNG 1130, for students who have some experience in Hungarian. Reviews basic grammar and improves reading, writing and listening skills.
    HNG 1182 Elementary Hungarian: Review and Progress 2
    Credits: 3; Prereq: instructor permission.
    An accelerated one-semester coverage of HNG 1130 and HNG 1131 for students with some experience in Hungarian, and in preparation for HNG 2220.
    HNG 2220 Intermediate Hungarian 1
    Credits: 4; Prereq: HNG 1131 or placement test.
    Intermediate study of speaking, reading, writing and listening comprehension skills with new vocabulary and grammar.
    HNG 2221 Intermediate Hungarian 2
    Credits: 4; Prereq: HNG 2220 or placement test.
    Improves speaking, reading, writing and listening skills by building upon language principles introduced in HNG 2220.

    TUR 1130 Beginning Turkish 1
    Credits: 5.
    This course and its sequel, TUR 1131, constitute the introductory sequence in Turkish.
    TUR 1131 Beginning Turkish 2
    Credits: 5; Prereq: TUR 1130 with minimum grade of C.
    Second semester of the introductory sequence in Turkish.
    TUR 1180 Elementary Turkish: Review and Progress
    Credits: 3; Prereq: instructor permission.
    For students who have previous or heritage learning experience with Turkish language, but who are not advanced enough to take Intermediate Turkish (TUR 2220). Students gain competence in grammar, reading, listening and writing skills, particularly in the use of the present simple, the simple past and the continuous tenses.
    TUR 1182 Preparation for Intermediate Turkish
    Credits: 3; Prereq: instructor permission.
    Alternative course to TUR 1180 for students who have had four years of high school Turkish or the equivalent. The course focuses on grammar, particularly on the acquisition of future, past and past continuous tenses. Student comprehension and active use of all basic grammar in beginner-level Turkish will be complete in preparation for Intermediate Turkish (TUR 2220).

    TUR 2340 Turkish for Heritage Learners 1
    Credits: 3; Prereq: instructor permission.
    For students with significant bilingual speaking and listening backgrounds. The main emphasis is on reading, writing and expanding vocabulary.
