Academic Learning Compact: Classical Studies

The Bachelor of Arts in classical studies, with specializations in classical civilization, ancient language, teacher certification or modern Greek studies provides a strong foundation in the liberal arts through study of the language, literature, monuments and history of ancient Greece and Rome. You will develop linguistic, critical thinking and writing skills while gaining knowledge of classical civilization. You also will explore the connection between the ancient and modern worlds and discover the contributions of classical culture to western civilization.

• Successfully complete a department capstone course for majors.
• Complete requirements for the baccalaureate degree, as determined by faculty.

Skills You Will Acquire in the Major (SLOs)

1. Identify and relate language competence in Latin, ancient Greek or modern Greek and knowledge of grammar and vocabulary of one or more of these languages.
2. Identify, describe and define knowledge of the socio-historical context of ancient Greece and Rome.
3. Analyze and interpret Latin, ancient Greek or modern Greek literature in the original or in English.
4. Recognize and evaluate the cultural phenomena of the ancient Mediterranean world and their relationship to the modern world.
5. Translate passages of Latin, ancient Greek or modern Greek literature into English; students demonstrate communicative competence in modern Greek (for modern Greek specialization).
6. Synthesize a well-organized argument from textual or other evidence and express it in formal English prose.
