Art Education
The curriculum in art education is designed for students who plan to teach art in the public schools. This curriculum, offered in cooperation with the College of Education, prepares students to apply for certification for teaching art in Florida and all other NCATE states.
Overview
Art education at UF provides students with extensive opportunities to apply theory to practice and to hone their knowledge and skills as preprofessional art teachers through field placements in local art classrooms and alternative art education settings.
Students study a variety of topics, including comprehensive art education, computer applications in the field, curricular integration, art educational philosophies and theories, developmental theories in art, instructional strategies involving art production and dialogue, alternative assessment strategies, and the role and importance of art in the elementary school curriculum. The program culminates in the student teaching practicum, where students are expected to demonstrate their readiness to assume full responsibility as professional art educators.
A portfolio review will be required of students before admission into junior-level studio courses.

Critical Tracking
To graduate with this major, students must complete all university, college and major requirements.
Equivalent critical-tracking courses as determined by the State of Florida Common Course Prerequisites may be used for transfer students.
Semester 1
- 2.5 UF GPA for semesters 1-2
- Complete a total of 9 hours (ART 1802C, ART 1803C) or a total of 6 hours of any 2000-level ART/PGY/GRA courses with minimum grades of C
Semester 2
- Complete 3 of 8 critical-tracking courses with minimum grades of C: EDF 2085, ART 2305C, ARH 2050, PSY 2012, ARE 2045 or EDF 1005, ARH 2051, two 2000-level ART/PGY/GRA courses
Semester 3
- 2.75 UF GPA required
- Complete 3 additional critical-tracking courses with minimum grades of C
Semester 4
- 3.0 UF GPA for semesters 4-5
- Complete 2 additional critical-tracking courses with minimum grades of C
- Complete the general knowledge test (FTCE) with posted test scores

Students must select an upper-division studio concentration: ceramics, drawing, painting, printmaking, sculpture or creative photography. The prerequisite for upper-division courses is two 2000-level studio courses in the chosen concentration. Students must also take and pass the general knowledge portion of the FTCE.
