  • Music History/Ethnomusicology Minor

    Hours: 18 credits, completed with minimum grades of C

    The minor in history/ethnomusicology does not require an audition, but a background in music is recommended. A theory placement exam is required to determine the appropriate level of theory the student should be taking.

    In addition to the courses listed below, participation in one or more of the School of Music's ensembles is recommended. Only nine hours below the 3000 level will count toward the minor and at least 12 hours of coursework must be completed at UF.

    Students should contact the undergraduate adviser before enrolling in coursework.

    Required Courses

    MUT 1121 Music Theory 1 and MUT 1122 Music Theory 2 or
    MUT 2126 Music Theory 3 and MUT 2127 Music Theory 4
      (depending on placement after taking the theory placement exam)
    MUH 2501 Introduction to World Musics or
    MUL 2010 Introduction to Music Literature
    MUH/MUL courses at the 3000/4000 level, such as:
    MUH 3211 Survey of Music History 1
    MUH 3212 Survey of Music History 2
    MUH 3213 Survey of Music History 3
    MUH 3530 Popular and Traditional Music of Africa
    MUH 3541 Latin American Music
    MUH 4016 History of Jazz
    MUH 4930 Sepcial Topics in Music History
    MUL 3351 Classical Literature
    MUL 3693 The American Musical
    MUL 4662 History and Literature of Opera
    MUS 4905 Projects and Problems in Music
      (with approval of Musicology/Ethnomusicology faculty)
