Academic Learning Compact - Portuguese

The Bachelor of Arts in Portuguese allows you to achieve communicative competence in all four language skills: speaking, comprehension, reading and writing. You will become knowledgeable in Portuguese and Brazilian culture, literature and/or linguistics, and you will learn how to interpret Portuguese-language texts according to their cultural, literary and/or linguistic content.

Before Graduating You Must

• Satisfactorily complete an assignment in a 4000-level course that includes the written analysis of a text according to its cultural, literary and/or linguistic content (text analyzed and the analysis will be in Portuguese) and an oral presentation and discussion conducted in Portuguese.
• Complete requirements for the baccalaureate degree, as determined by faculty.

Skills You Will Acquire in the Major (SLOs)

1. Knowledge of and ability to interpret cultural correlates, literary production and/or linguistic structure of texts written in Portuguese.
2. Competence in written Portuguese, including knowledge of grammar, vocabulary, orthography and appropriate stylistic conventions.
3. Communicative competence in spoken Portuguese, including the ability to understand the spoken language, speak fluently with correct grammar, vocabulary and pronunciation, and use appropriate registers.
